Free App Store listing audit

Paste an App Store link to score the listing out of 100 on its title, screenshots, ratings, last update and description. Every check uses the weights and thresholds of AsoBeast’s own ASO audit, cites Apple’s guidance and comes with a fix ranked by the points it adds. It runs in your browser, with no signup.

It scores the 60 of the 110 points in AsoBeast’s App Store audit that Apple’s public data shows.

The link to your App Store page, or the number after “id” in it. A link with a country in it picks that country.

How to use it

How to audit an App Store listing

Three steps, a few seconds. Nothing to install and no account.

  1. 01

    Paste the App Store link

Copy it from the app’s App Store page, or use Share › Copy Link in the App Store app. The numeric app ID works too, and so does a competitor’s link.

  2. 02

    Pick the country

Ratings, descriptions and screenshots differ by storefront. A link with a country code, such as /gb/, picks that country for you.

  3. 03

    Work through the fixes

The top fixes come first, ranked by the points each adds to the score. Every check below shows what it found and the rule behind it.

Method

How the ASO score is calculated

Each check scores 0 to 10. A factor is the weighted mean of its checks, and the score out of 100 weighs the factors as below. Grades: A from 85, B from 70, C from 50, D from 30, F below.

The factors of the App Store listing audit, their weights and what each one checks
FactorWeightWhat it checks
Title20Full marks from 27 of 30 characters, most from 20. Repeated words, ™ and ®.
Screenshots15Full marks from 8 of 10 screenshots. Universal apps also need 3 iPad screenshots.
Ratings15Average rating against 4.0 and 4.5 stars, and the number of ratings on a log scale from 10 to 100,000.
Description5A full first sentence, a call to action, social proof, and line breaks or bullets.
Updates and languages5An update within 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, release notes that say what changed, and 10 or more languages.

Apple’s guidance

Why each part of the listing counts

The checks follow what Apple says about product pages, App Store search and ratings.

  • Title

Your app name can be up to 30 characters and is one of the fields Apple matches searches against. Apple asks for a simple, memorable name that hints at what the app does.

  • Screenshots

Apple lets you show up to 10 screenshots, and the first one to three appear in search results when you have no app preview, so they decide whether people open your page.

  • Ratings

Apple shows your rating on your page and in search results and says ratings can influence how you rank. It also warns that having few ratings may discourage people from downloading.

  • Description

Apple calls the first sentence the most important, because people read it before tapping more, and describes the ideal as a concise paragraph followed by a short list of main features.

  • Updates

Each update carries What’s New, which Apple shows on your page and in the Updates tab. Apple suggests listing new features in order of importance.

  • Languages

Apple suggests localizing your description, keywords and screenshots for each market you sell in, and translating your app name where it helps.

Questions

App Store listing audit questions

What is an ASO score?

A number out of 100 that says how closely an App Store listing follows known App Store Optimization practice. This one weighs the title, screenshots, ratings, description and updates. It is a checklist for your next release, not a prediction of downloads or rankings.

How is the score calculated?

Each check scores 0 to 10 against fixed thresholds, each factor is the weighted mean of its checks, and the factors add up by weight to a score out of 100. The weights and thresholds are the ones AsoBeast’s audit uses, and its source is public on GitHub.

What is a good ASO score?

A (excellent) from 85, B (good) from 70, C (fair) from 50, D (weak) from 30, and F (poor) below 30. Large brands often score lower on the title, because a short name is a choice they can afford. Start with the top fixes, which are ranked by the points they add.

Why doesn’t it check my subtitle or keyword field?

Apple’s public lookup data does not include the subtitle, and the keyword field is private to App Store Connect. Paste both into the free keyword field checker to check them against Apple’s rules.

Why does my score change between countries?

Ratings are counted per country, and the description, release notes and screenshots can be localized. Pick the country you care about, or paste a link that names it.

Can I audit a competitor’s listing?

Yes. Any public App Store listing works, so you can paste a competitor’s link and compare the two scores factor by factor.

Does it audit Google Play listings?

No. Google Play has no public lookup API that a browser can call, so this free audit covers the App Store only. AsoBeast audits Google Play listings too, with weights of their own.

Do you store the apps I audit?

No. Your browser asks Apple’s public iTunes lookup for the listing and scores it on your device. The app ID never reaches AsoBeast’s servers.
